As a committed educator and designer, I seek to unlock possibility in all learners, strengthen the courses I teach, collaborate with, mentor, and support the faculty with whom I work, and enhance the community in which I teach.  I apply design-centered problem solving to creating meaningful learning experiences for diverse populations of learners.

Teaching Experience
  • Promoted to Course Director after one month as Associate Course Director of composition.

  • Introduce students to the principles of effective professional presentation and public speaking, including developing a speech, organizing a speech to support both informative and persuasive claims, using storytelling and figurative language to enhance a speech/presentation’s style, utilizing best practices for visual aids with a focus on clarity and simplicity, and honing delivery and non-verbal elements of a presentation/speech.

  • In the first of a new series of informal round table discussions, the Brown Bag Extravaganza team collaborated to present a session on GoTo Training/GoTo Meeting, Full Sail University’s primary means of synchronous interaction with our online students. Attendees learned strategies for encouraging attendance, engaging students during a session, and how to overcome technical problems.

 

“An introduction to PCP.” Curriculum Innovation Forum, Full Sail University, September 2013.

  • Developed a brief presentation explaining the course objectives, structure, and measurement tools used in Professional Communication and Presentation as part of a curriculum innovation forum meeting for entertainment business and music business faculty and staff.

 

“Liberal Studies Best Practices.” Academic Effectiveness Faculty Committee, Full Sail University, August 2013.

  • Presented an overview of best practices being used by faculty within the liberal studies department at Full Sail university. The presentation included a new course launch, infographics in online and campus courses, collaboration between courses, using iPads in the classroom, and multi-modal composition as a teaching tool.

  • Participated in the first annual poster session. Developed tryptic and presentation communicating my perspective on using infographics to teach complex ideas as well as sharing some best practices for creating infographics with attendees.

 

“Building your Professional Persona.” Full Sail University, X-Factor, July 2013.

  • Developed a 30-minute presentation followed by Q&A on developing and building a professional persona online for the women’s group at Full Sail University. The goal was to empower young women with the tools and ideas they need to develop professionalism before ending their academic careers.

 

“The Presentation Revolution: Simple Design.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, May 2013.

  • Simple Design was a workshop designed to introduce educators to 21st century design best practices. The workshop was conducted in an effort to aid teachers in creating dynamic Keynote/PowerPoint lecture and lesson materials that help engage students, appeal to multiple learning styles, and serve as enhancements of classroom instructions, as opposed to a transcript of lecture notes.

  • Co-presented the first Liberal Studies Round Table session, whose focus was defining and creating a teaching persona in the online environment. 

 

“Introduction to the Presentation Revolution.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, April 2013.

  • Co-presented this Faculty Development Workshop at Full Sail University with Alex Rister.  Attendees learned about 21st century presentations. We instructed faculty on presentations as a three-legged stool made up of content, visuals, and delivery.

 

“Telling Your Story: From the Page to the Picture.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, February 2013.

  • Co-presented this Faculty Development Workshop at Full Sail University with Dr.  Danita Berg and Alex Rister.  Attendees learned how to write personal narratives and how to translate those narratives into visual storytelling in Keynote.

 

“Your Academic Presence: Creating CVs, Teaching Portfolios, and Online Personas.” Full Sail University English Department, Dec. 17, 2012.

  • Served as co-presenter during a department-wide professional development initiative. I instructed fellow colleagues on best practices for creating and developing an online professional site through Wordpress.com.

 

“Curriculum Innovation Forum: Presentations that Rock” (Co-presenter). Full Sail University Faculty Development, Dec. 11, 2012.

  • Along with co-presenter, Alex Rister, I discussed three best visual design and cognitive practices educators can implement in developing visual aids for the classroom.

 

“Real Delivery: Presenting as Yourself.” Full Sail University Digital Art and Design Department, October, 2012- present.

  • To fulfill a perceived gap in students’ experience with presenting, I developed a workshop specifically for DAD students in Suzy Johnson’s Typography course. Students workshopped ways to combat presentation anxiety as well as learning the basics of natural presentation delivery.

  • As part of my commitment to Full Sail University’s Academic Effectiveness Committee, I researched Garrison, Anderson and Archer’s (2000) “Critical Inquiry in A Text-based Environment: Computer Conferencing in Higher Education” and presented an introduction to this concept.

 

“Presentation Best Habits.” Full Sail University Digital Literacy Department, August 2012.

  • Alex Rister and I developed a video Q & A series based on Mrs. Rister’s Six Minutes article, “Ten Presentation Habits My Students and You Need to Unlearn.” The video is used  as an instructional aid by the digital literacy department.

 

“Visualizing Resumes: Communicating your Professional Persona in the 21st Century.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, February 2012- present.

  • In this workshop, I introduce attendees to 21st century methods of professional and personal branding including visual resumes, methods to develop a dynamic online portfolio, and best practices for moving away from the paper resume.

 

“Confessions of a Logoleptic.” PechaKucha Orlando, June 2011.

  • Developed, designed, and presented an original presentation titled “Confessions of a Logoleptic” at volume 2 of this world-known, fast-paced style of presenting. 

 

“Presenting Naked.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, March 2011-Present.

  • As part of Full Sail University’s commitment to on going faculty and staff development, I developed and currently conduct a two hour workshop on delivery and performance. The goal of this workshop is to introduce attendees to dynamic ways they can capture an audience’s attention, maintain engagement, encourage participation, and sustain an energetic and dynamic pace.

 

“Tweak Your Slides.” Full Sail University English Department,  January 2010.

  • I developed a brief workshop covering 10 visual design principles department instructors could apply to creating effective in-classroom visual aids and online learning materials. 

 

“10 Design Principles for Educators.” Full Sail University Faculty Development, December 2010-Present.

  • I developed and currently conduct a workshop whose aim is to introduce educators to 10 visual design principles they can apply to creating effective in-classroom visual aids and online learning materials such as podcasts. The purpose of this workshop is to familiarize attendees with the how to’s of designing slides and then give participants and opportunity to actually design a set of slides.

 

“The New Slide Revolution.” Full Sail University,  July 2010.

  • Along with a colleague, I developed and delivered a workshop designed to help students, faculty, and staff develop impacting, engaging, and effective slideshow presentations. The purpose of the workshop is to develop a “think like a designer” approach to planning and designing visual aids, with the focus on the visual aid functioning as an enhancement to the speaker and not a detriment.

 

“MLA Format Made Easy.” Valencia College Communications Student Support Center, 2005-2008.

  • Developed and delivered a two-hour workshop on MLA that included formatting an MLA paper; quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing secondary source information, and developing a works cited page. This workshop was open to students, faculty, and staff.

 

“Don’t Panic: The Prep Student’s Guide to the Competency Exam.” Valencia College Communications Student Support Center, 2005-2008.

  • Developed and delivered a three-part workshop series on test prep for the required exit exam in Preparatory English II. Part one of this series focused on basic test prep including study skills, time management, and methods to reduce anxiety. Part two focused on the grammar and sentence skills portions of the exam. Part three focused on the essay portion of the examination. 

 

“Revising and Editing: What’s the difference?” Valencia College Communications Student Support Center, 2005-2008.

  • Developed and delivered a one hour lesson for CSSC clients on what revision is, how to engage in revision, best practices for revision, and the importance of higher order areas before lower level areas in revision. The session also covered the differences between revising and editing as well as providing tips for effective editing and proofreading. This session was open to students, faculty, and staff. 

 

“Developing a Documented Argument.” Valencia College Communications Student Support Center, 2005-2008.

  • Developed and delivered a two hour workshop for English composition students to better prepare them for writing a persuasive essay with research and documentation. The session covered the basics of persuasion, finding and integrating primary and secondary research, and organizing a persuasive essay.

  • As the faculty co-sponsor for this student organization, I work with students to develop community service-minded projects including film screenings, food drives, work with local organizations such as Rock for Hunger, and on campus events to increase awareness for the issue affecting our local and global communities.

  • Attended and conducted workshops to develop skills in foundational, pedagogical, technical, interpersonal, and holistic skills. Trained in the following: developing rubrics, facilitating online learning, Wordpress portfolios, curriculum development, Photoshop, ScreenFlow, campus security, developing student organizations, utilizing Web 2.0 tools, ADA compliance/Student Support Services, and fair use and copyrighted works in the classroom.

  • As a member of this committee, I evaluated requests for funds by student organizations, and I helped determine how student activities fees would be distributed for the coming year.  

 

Winter Park Campus Book Club, Faculty Advisor , Fall 2007-2008 

  • As the Faculty Advisor for the Winter Park Campus Book Club, I worked with student leaders, faculty, and librarians to develop a “Get InTo Reading” book club whose goals are to discuss key issues in chosen texts, increase literacy and reading awareness in the community, and fundraise for charities related to the featured text.  

 

Strategic Planning 2008-2013, Strategies, Goals and Objectives Task Force, Goal 4: “Partner with the Community”, Team Member, Fall 2007 

  • The Strategic Planning Committee’s charge was to reevaluate Valencia College’s commitment to students, faculty, staff, and the community at large.  As a member of the Goal 4 team, I worked closely with other faculty, staff, and administrators; I drafted the language of the outcomes as well as an accompanying essay, outlining the spirit, scope, and focus of Goal 4. 

 

Quality Matters, Certified Peer Reviewer, Summer 2007-2008 

  • After completing the Online Course Shell Development project in the fall of 2006 (see below), I attended an eight-hour training session to become a certified Quality Matters Peer Reviewer of online courses.   The purpose of peer reviewing is to improve the overall quality of the online learning environment via an in-depth review of an individual’s online course.  

 

Cooperative Learning Community, Success Coach, 2006-2008 

  • As part of Valencia’s CLC, I work closely with students in preparatory courses as a success coach.  Students and I meet and work on several assignments designed around Valencia’s LifeMap tool, an interactive service that allows students to determine the course of their educational and professional careers.   

 

Online Course Shell Development, Course Developer, Fall 2006  

  • I worked in conjunction with two fellow professors to develop an alternative delivery online course shell for Freshman Composition I via the WebCT environment.  Developed content and determined best possible approach to course; worked closely with course designer to create shell to be used in future sections of Freshman Composition I.

  • Planned and staffed quarterly support center festivals that brought awareness to the services offered by Valencia support centers. Festivals served as an important point of contact between students, faculty, and staff.

  • As part of the Communications Student Support Center, consulted with students on a one on one basis, helping them develop several key skill sets, including essay writing, grammar, style, proper documentation, research strategies, reading for comprehension, and effective speech/presentation.
